SALEM, NH--(MARKET WIRE)--Jan 10, 2005 -- The NanoBreeze® Room Air Purifier
from NanoTwin Technologies, Inc. uses photocatalytic nanotechnology to clean
and purify the air inside your home. EPA reports that a growing body of scientific
evidence indicates that the air within homes and other buildings can be more
seriously polluted than the outdoor air. People spend approximately 90 percent
of their time indoors. The risks to personal health are greater due to air pollution
indoors than outdoors. According to EPA, "Indoor air pollution is one risk
that you can do something about."
The NanoBreeze Room Air Purifier is a lightweight home appliance that decomposes
the harmful gases from fuel or tobacco smoke, airborne germs or allergens, odors
from mildew or trash, and the fumes from plastics, finishes, perfumes and cleaners.
The product oxidizes both volatile organic chemicals (VOCs) and bioaerosols.
VOCs are emitted as gases from certain solids or liquids and many can cause
adverse health effects. Concentrations of many VOCs can be up to ten times higher
indoors than outdoors. VOCs are emitted by tobacco smoke, fuels, plastics, solvents
and fragrances. A bioaerosol is a microscopic-size powder or droplet of biological
origin suspended in air. Frequently encountered bioaerosols include molds, bacteria,
viruses, pollens, and pet dander.
Nanotechnology involves the use of man-made materials so small; they are measured
on the scale of a nanometer. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) crystals, only 40 nanometers
in size, form a molecular machine powered by light. TiO2 is a semiconductor
charged by ultraviolet photons. When these nanoparticles are charged, they produce
free radicals which convert organic pollutants to carbon dioxide and water.
The process is known as oxidation by photocatalysis, from combining the Greek
words for light and dissolve.
The NanoBreeze Room Air Purifier has no filters to replace or collecting plates
to clean and produces no ozone. HEPA filters capture rather than oxidize airborne
contaminants. Carbon filters are needed to capture gases. The filters need to
be replaced, which imposes a high cost of ownership. Electronic air purifiers
include ionizers and ozone generators. Ionizers charge large dust particles
which either deposit on room surfaces or are collected on metal plates that
need to be cleaned frequently. Ionizers do not remove gases or odors and may
produce ozone. The oxidation power of ozone is not as powerful an oxidant as
photocatalytic TiO2. Ozone is considered toxic and can aggravate asthma. The
EPA does not recommend using ozone generators within occupied indoor spaces.
The NanoBreeze Room Air Purifier produces no eye or skin exposure hazards from
ultraviolet radiation. Ultraviolet air purifiers use Germicidal type UVC radiation
to kill germs by destroying their DNA. UVC radiation is hazardous to all living
things. Germicidal UV air purifiers do not remove gases and can also produce
ozone. The NanoBreeze Room Air Purifier uses a patented UVA light tube. The
outside of the tube features a fiberglass wrapping that has been coated with
a nanometer thin layer of photocatalytic TiO2, which absorbs all ultraviolet
emissions from the lamp.
